Card Feature Wednesday 9 - Teacher thank you cards

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

As it's the end of the school year I decided to make Hollie's teachers a thank you card. She has 2 teachers who share the week and a teaching assistant, so I made three cards.

I went with the Clearly Besotted Fabulous Fuchsia stamp set and used the fuchsia outline stamp on some patterned paper. I made a tag to put the fuchsias on but somehow forgot to punch the hole so had to draw it on!

I added some Stickles glitter to the fuchsias and I used the sentiment from the same set and stamped it on a oval card.

For the patterned paper for the background and the fuchsias I used the Recollections The Sweetest Thing paper pad and just changed the paper for the fuchsias on the different cards, I made 2 cards with the pink fuchsias and one with the yellow fuchsia.

I also added some ribbon and buttons for embellishment and inked the edges of the tag to make it less plain.

Paper - Recollections The Sweetest Thing | Stamps - Clearly Besotted Fabulous Fuchsias | Ribbon and buttons - Hobbycraft | Stickles crystal glitter.

Right I'm off to enjoy the time left before I have to pick Hollie up for the last time for 6 weeks!

Hope you are having a fabulous week!

Card Feature Wednesday 8 - You are wonderful

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

For today's card, I wanted to make a card with the You Are stamp set from Clearly Besotted. I thought the stamp that had the outline of the flower would be good to use on some patterned paper. I chose the paper from Recollections The Sweetest Thing as I love the colours in this pack.

I stamped two large flowers and then stamped a third but cut it out to be a smaller flower. I used the sentiment that came with the stamp set and chose the "wonderful" stamp to go with the "you are".

Keeping the background plain, I added some small punched hydrangeas and some sequins. To embellish the flowers more, I added a button to the centre.

Paper - Recollections The Sweetest Thing | Stamp - Clearly Besotted You Are | Sequins - Doodlebug | Small flower - Martha Stewart Hydrangea punch | Tag - Clearly Besotted Tag Along Die | Buttons - American Craft and Sew Sweet.

Although the background is plain, there is a lot going on with the colours and patterns to bring the card together.

Hope you have a lovely day. See you soon.

Baby Changing Organiser

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

When it comes to organising baby items and toys, I like to use boxes. I have a house full of boxes. My husband dreads going to places like Ikea as he knows we will come back with storage!

Before Amelia was born I wanted to find a box that I could use to store the items I would need to use for changing her nappy.

I came across a set in Ikea called Lattsam basket set. The set contains a large bin with lid, medium bin and a small bin and the large and medium have removable clips as they are designed to fit on a changing table.

I used the large bin as a rubbish bin in the car and used the small one in the bathroom. The medium bin is what I decided to use for this project.

I kept the clips on the bin and put the things in the bin, like the nappies, wipes, mat etc, that I would need to use most often.

When Amelia was in our room in her moses basket and then in her cot, I put the bin on the rail on the side of the cot.

When Amelia moved in to her sister's room, I put the bin on the top of the radiator. I didn't keep it in the cot as she moves a lot more now and obviously the radiator isn't on at the moment as it's summer but it's only on low when it is so I am not worried about it.

Normally the bin stays upstairs as I have a bigger box downstairs, but it could easily be moved around the house. It's so handy instead of looking for everything separately and so easy to refill.

Small organising projects might not seem like much but can be really helpful when you are in a hurry. I love it when I find something that makes life a little bit easier!

Hope you are having a lovely week.

Lactose free cheesecake

Thursday, July 10, 2014

As someone who is lactose intolerant, I find it hard to get cakes and desserts that don't contain milk. My favourite dessert is cheesecake so I decided to make one without the lactose in it and using some of the Lactofree products as I have found them the closest tasting to milk.

The ingredients that you will need to make the cheesecake are:

83g Digestive biscuits - the supermarket value ones quite often don't contain milk, check the packet.
33g Dairy free spread.
200g Lactofree soft cheese
100ml Lactofree cream
1tsp Vanilla
33g Icing sugar.
1 Leaf of gelatin.

You can easily change the lactose free items to normal ones and it will work exactly the same.

First you need melt the butter and then blend the biscuits either in a blender or by hand like I did.

Then add the biscuits to the melted butter and press into a tin or dish like I used.

Then you need to whisk the soft cheese, add the vanilla and icing sugar.
Whisk the cream until it forms peaks.
Fold the cream into the mixture.
If you want to add the gelatin, follow the packet on how to dissolve the gelatin and you could add it to the cream before adding to the rest of the mixture.

Then add the mixture to the top of the biscuits base and put in the fridge to set.

I added strawberries to the top of the cheesecake but you could add other fruit like oranges or kiwi or you could add grated chocolate, yum!

When making this cheesecake I didn't add the gelatine and it came out more soft consistency but adding the gelatine will firm up the cheesecake.

I would like to try and make some more desserts that don't contain lactose and will let you know how I get on if I do make some.

Hope you are having a great week. See you soon.

Card Feature Wednesday 7 - Just saying hello

Wednesday, July 09, 2014

The cards today I made for some relatives so that I could send some photos of the girls and write a little message in the card to send with them.

For the cards I punched out some hearts in different papers and a label for the sentiment to go on.
The cards are very similar except on the first one I used an embossing folder on the background and used the Basic Grey Lemonade papers on it. I stuck the hearts down before putting it through the embossing folder so it emboss the hearts too.

Paper - Basic Grey Lemonade | Stamp - Hero Arts All Occasions | Heart and label punch - Hobbycraft | Embossing folder - Cuttlebug Swiss Dots.

The second card I used the My Minds Eye The Sweetest Thing papers. Love the colours in these patterned papers. I left the background plain on this one. I decided to use the sentiment from the Hero Arts All Occasions stamps rather than just leaving the card plain.

I tend to make mainly female birthday cards usually so I am hoping to make more of a variety of cards to add to my stash and show on the blog.

Hope you are having a great week. See you soon.

Shared Girls Room Inspiration

Tuesday, July 08, 2014

With having 2 girls and living in a 2 bedroom house, the girls were inevitably going to share a room.

Amelia is 5 1/2 months and I think now is the perfect time to move Amelia in with Hollie. Hollie has known and understood that this would happen from the beginning. She has been looking forward to sharing with her sister.

I thought I would show you a few of the things I think would be good in the room.

Curtains - Dunhelm | Light shade - Dunhelm | Bunk-bed - Argos | Wardrobe - Ikea | Rug - Ikea | Mint paint - B and Q | Yellow paint - B and Q | Chest of drawers - Ikea | Lamp - Next.

In the room is three yellow walls and one bright pink and I want to keep the yellow walls and change the bright pink wall to mint green so that it brightens up the room and make it look bigger. There will be some pink in the accessories including the lights and the bedding so didn't want the walls to be pink as well.

Hollie already has a bunk-bed that we bought at the end of last year and I made sure we got a white one so that it would blend in more with the room as it's such a large tall piece of furniture. Amelia's cot bed, which was Hollies, is antique pine so will break up the white furniture a bit and when she is bigger she will be able to go on the bottom of the bunk-bed.

At the moment, as the cot bed is going in the room, we can only fit in the wardrobe but eventually we will put in a chest of drawers too.

The room is an average size second bedroom for an English house but with the bunk-bed it seems quite small so don't want to make it too cluttered and hopefully keep a little bit of space in between the bunk-bed and the cot bed.

I will show you the photos of the room when it is complete or as near as it can be!

How to use Kam pliers and toy strap tutorial

Thursday, July 03, 2014

Recently I have been making things using the Kam pliers and I thought I would show you how they are used in case anyone would like to know.

I bought the Kam pliers from Ebay in a set with the accessories that you need to work the pliers and  pack of snap poppers in 2 sizes in 10 colours. I got them via auction for £8.99. You can find the Kam pliers and poppers separately on Ebay and you can also find lots of different sets. There are some nice sets with everything you need including ribbon.

These are the tools that you get with the pliers.

I got 4 sizes of the black caps for the front of the snap poppers and 2 sizes of the metal bolt and rubber cap. You need to make sure you are using the correct size black cap with the correct popper and also the correct size metal bolt and rubber cap with the correct size back popper.

The snap poppers come with a front part and 2 different back parts, You need to use a different back part to snap them together.

I did found it difficult to understand how to use the Kam pliers as they didn't come with instructions, I learnt as I was going along and from on the Internet. In the set is a small screwdriver and you need this for the 2 screws that you need to alter in the picture.

To make the toy strap you need have a length of ribbon, in this case I had a 12 inch piece of ribbon. Fold over the ends approx 1/2 inch and then pierce the top part of the popper in the ribbon and place the back of popper on the back. Use the pliers to squeeze them together.

Make sure you use enough pressure so that the spike is squashed enough so the other side of the snap popper will snap on it properly. It did take a few goes to realise how much I needed to squeeze it.

Once you have done this popper you can add one further along the ribbon to make the loop. Make sure you use the opposite back side of the popper and make sure the fronts of the poppers are facing the same way.

When you have finished the poppers, I added a little bit of glue to the end of the ribbon to stop them fraying but could use a lighter to seal the ends too.

The toy strap is easy to make but the pliers did take me a while to work out what size is for which popper etc. and I did go though a few poppers before I worked out what I was doing wrong.

Once you get the hang of the pliers you can have a go at making all sorts of things. Have you got any ideas of what you would use them for?

Here are some of the projects I have made using the Kam Pliers.

Pacifier Clip Holder.

Sophie the giraffe strap.

Altering bibs with snap poppers.

Card Feature Wednesday 6

Wednesday, July 02, 2014

The card today is a really simple lazy card and it doesn't involve any stamps.

I needed to make a card with a name on it and didn't have any stamps big enough so I just created one in Microsoft word and then printed it on some card. The font is Scriptina, love this font.

To embellish the card, I punched out some butterflies and flowers from some Martha Stewart punches in different patterned papers, added some little gems to the centre of the flowers and butterflies and I put them on some glue dots to make them more dimensional.

Papers - My Minds Eye The sweetest thing honey | Punches - Martha Stewart 3 in 1 butterfly and 3 in 1 hydrangea | Gems - Hobbycraft.

I really liked the way this card turned out with the style of the font and the patterned papers. I have a feeling I may be making more quick cards like this too.

Hope you are having a good week. See you soon.
