Unicorn Light Box

Monday, May 14, 2018

I saw some unicorn scrapbook paper in Hobbycraft recently and knew the girls would love it. I picked up a sheet and decided to use it to decorate Hollie's light box.

It was really simple to do as you just need to cut three strips that are high enough and wide enough to fit into each section.

The unicorn paper looks really pretty in normal daylight but as it was double sided with clouds on the back, when the light was on you could see both sides so would definitely recommend using single sided paper.

Most of the clouds on the reverse of the paper don't affect it and I think it looks really pretty when you put in the letters.

Hair accessory display

Friday, May 15, 2015

There are so many pretty hair accessories around these days that it is so easy to get carried away buying them. We have a fair few in our house, having two girls and they can just sit in a box or just lay around the house sometimes and not have a clue what we actually have.

Me being into crafts and making things, I decided to make a display for them!

I wasn't sure at first what kind of display I wanted to go with and looked at lots of ideas on Pinterest but in the end I decided to stick with a canvas frame.

Using a canvas meant that I didn't have to paint a frame and it wouldn't be open in the centre but was still sturdy enough to hold the clips.

I bought some ribbon from Hobbycraft that was 16mm wide and went with a grosgrain ribbon as it is thicker than a silk ribbon. I just spaced them out alternatively on the canvas and then secured them with some push pins to the back of the canvas.

The canvas is quite a big one as I wanted to use it for both the girls and chose to add their initials, one either side of the canvas. I bought some wooden letters while in Hobbycraft and painted them with normal matt emulsion, one pink and one mint green.

I wanted to add some sparkle to the letters so added some glitter paint to the letters. It worked really well. To secure the letters to the canvas I used some tacky glue.

To hang the canvas up on the wall, I added some ribbon secured by more push pins.

When I had rounded up most of the hair clips and bows, I added them to the canvas. Although they are on separates sides, Hollie has worn some of Amelia's pretty bow clips too!

I really hope that this canvas helps with keeping the girls hair accessories more organised, well we can try!

Do you think is a good idea to organise hair accessories? Would you try making one? Let me know what you think.

Ombre Butterfly Mobile

Monday, March 30, 2015

I have gradually been trying to sort the girls room out by rearranging the furniture and organising it. Now that I have the furniture where I want it (for the time being anyway), I wanted to do some projects.
One project that I wanted to do was to make another butterfly mobile like the one I made a few years ago.

The first one I made was all white and used two embroidery hoops. I decided to use another embroidery hoop for this mobile but I only had one as I was trying to use what I already had and I think it looks better with one anyway.

The butterflies were punched out of three different coloured card, a light, medium and a dark, to create an ombre effect to the mobile and I used a large Martha Stewart Monarch butterfly punch. I love this punch as it creates a more detailed butterfly than the one I used before.

To attach the butterflies to the mobile, I used some thin white cotton thread. I just tied the thread to the embroidery hoop.

To create the ombre effect I started with the darker butterflies at the top and then the middle colour and then the lightest at the bottom.

To attach the butterflies I used a glue dot in the middle of one butterfly, stuck it to the thread where I wanted to position it and then stuck another butterfly to it in the same position and then bent the butterfly to make it look like it was flying.

I really like the ombre effect as it adds more character to it.

I think this mobile as really easy to make and can be done in stages if you haven't got a lot of time in one go.

It would make a nice feature in a bedroom or playroom and you could change the butterflies to another shape like stars which I have done when I made one for my nephew.

It would make a lovely gift too. Would you consider making one? Maybe you would just prefer to receive one as a gift? Let me know.

Felt Name Garland

Monday, March 02, 2015

For our youngest nephew, for Christmas, I decided to make a felt garland of his name. I decided to do this as I didn't want to buy any toys or clothes as he already had enough and would get more for Christmas from others anyway.

For the embellishments, I used the Sizzix stars dies and cut out lots of small stars and some slightly larger ones. On the larger ones, I sewed on smiley faces.

I also decided to create some little trains using the Clearly Besotted Full Steam Ahead die set. I cut out 2 for each train ans the hand sewed them together.

I then hand sewed all the embellishments onto the letters and hand sewed the front and back together. I could (and should have) machine sewed them but didn't want to keep changing the threads every time, which would have been easier really.

I filled the letters with some hollow fibre filling which I bought a big bag from Dunelm.

I decided to use some ribbon to hang the garland up rather than using string as I thought it would be stronger and just attached the felt letters to the ribbon.

I think it turned out quite well for a first attempt and love the smiley faces and the trains.

Having your child's name in their bedroom wall is quite popular at the moment but I think it's great to help them learn their name.

What do you think? Is it something that is lovely to have on their wall or to much decor? Let me know.

Handmade photo album

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

I love to give family and friends photos of the girls and for Christmas I decided to make some handmade photo albums to put some photos in and give as presents.

To make the photo album I used a 9 1/4 x 5" piece of card and a 6 1/4 x 5" card.

On the large piece, I scored it at 1" and 2" on the 9 1/4" side. Fold over the card at the 2" mark to make the album spine. Adhere the front piece to the back piece on the first inch of the card.

To store the photos in the album, I added some clear card envelopes to the inside of the album. I just stacked them on top of each other until you have the amount you want and fit in the album and then adhered them into the album back piece.

Next I punched 2 holes to secure the clear envelopes into the album and then added some ribbon.

On the front of the albums, I used some patterned papers from My Mind's Eye.  I added a label from Spellbinders Nestabilities Label eight and stamped the word photos on to it. I punched out some flowers and butterflies using some Martha Stewart punches.

To jazz up the butterflies and flowers, I added some pearl gems.

These photo albums were quite easy to make and I think they make a cute little gift if you want to give a selection of photos but don't want to use a whole big album.

What do you think? Do you think they make good gifts? Would you be happy to receive one? Let me know.

Gift wrap box

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

For a few of the people that I needed to buy presents for, for Christmas, I decided to make them a gift wrap box for them.

I started off with a white box from Ikea and simply added a label to the front of the box with the words gift wrap stamped on it. I decided to keep the outside of the box simple so that it could fit in with any decor.

This is what I added to the box.

I started by adding a few stationery pieces like scissors, tape, binder clips, a notebook, pen and post it notes. I added some twine, some labels that could be used on presents, envelopes etc and some pretty washi tape.

I put in some tissue paper in a few colours and also put in some paper bags that I just added some patterned paper to, to jazz them up a bit.

A long with these items, I decided to make some cards and some gift tags too. I made some female that had bows and butterflies on and then some masculine cards with banners on. I made some gift tags with a punched heart or flower and added some bakers twine to them.

I wanted to add more but didn't get the time and I thought that they could add things to the box they already have or get in the future and then can keep it altogether.

I think that a gift wrap box is a great gift and the people I gave it to loved it.

Would you consider making a gift wrap box? Would you like to receive one as a gift? I Would love to know.
