Only child to older child!
Tuesday, April 28, 2015
When we knew we were having another child we knew that telling Hollie, who was 5 at the time, would be easier than explaining it to a toddler.
I tried to make sure that Hollie got enough attention before Amelia came but also wanted her to be independent so she wouldn't feel more isolated and excluded than she was going to feel.
Hollie loved being involved in seeing how to look after Amelia and being able to fetch things to help. She took on a lot more responsibility than we realised but luckily, at the age she was and was quite sensible for her age, it worked really well. She did kind of grow up faster than we realised.
Trying to cope with a baby and felling tired etc, we were going to get grouchy. The one thing I found we were doing more is telling Hollie off for quite trivial things and would take things more out of context and worry unnecessarily, like not tidying her toys away where she would say she was still playing with them. It would make us realise that we weren't explaining things enough to her, just taking it for granted she understood.
It wasn't until Amelia was born that the guilt set in. I didn't feel much guilt really until after giving birth.
I have found that somethings have slipped, like reading Hollie a bedtime story and reading her school book. This I felt guilty for and know she needs to keep reading but before Amelia was born we would read her school book straight after school but routines slip and can be hard sometimes to bring them back.
The one thing that Hollie and I haven't had is quality time just the two of us. We have lots of family time, her dad takes her swimming and to football and I spend a lot of time with Amelia but I feel like I don't give Hollie enough one on one time. So that's something I hope to change this, this year. We will see!
Now that Amelia is 15 months and Holllie is 7, they play really well and love spending time together. I know as they get older this will change but for now we are enjoying how the girls relationship develops.
Here are a few of my tips for a child which is going from only child to older child:
- Get your older child to help you but don't expect too much from them.
- Spend time all together playing and interacting so your older child doesn't feel isolated.
- Ask if your older child has any questions about anything so they don't bottle things up and you don't presume they know things and are fine.
- Let them know you are proud of them, you appreciate them and like how grown up they are.
- Make sure your older child get the special quality time with you, your partner and family so they feel appreciated.
Do you have any tips or tricks that can help with being the older child? Would love to hear your thought too!
Amelia 12 Months / 1 Year Update
Monday, February 09, 2015

Amelia now has 3 meals a day and snacks. She is really into finger foods and loves eating bananas and peas. She is now on to cows milk and has 2 bottles of whole milk a day, one in the morning and one before bed.

Sleep.
Amelia loves her sleep and has two naps a day most of the time unless we are out. They are usually between 9.30 and 11 and then 3.30 and 5. These usually happen more on a school day as they are more the routine.
She goes to bed about 9 and gets up about 7-7.30. This to some might seem late to go to bed but it works for us, with a nearly 7 year who share a bedroom with her sister and tends to go to bed first so she doesn't disturbed Amelia. Also by going to bed a bit later, she doesn't get up too early either, she tends to get up when her sister does.

Amelia is still in some 9-12 month old clothes but is in mainly 12-18 month old clothes. She will be able to wear more the 12-18 month tops she has, which are longer in length, when she is walking properly. She is also still in 4 plus nappies.
We got her feet measured and she is a 3H, which has been a little hard to get hold of. She is smaller and wider than her sister, so couldn't wear her sister shoes.
Loves.
Amelia loves to pretend to be on the phone. She uses anything including the remote control.

She also loves to to the downward dog yoga pose a lot.

She also really loves the swings. This picture is at Centre Parcs at Sherwood Forest on the beach there. We went to visit family who were staying there and couldn't miss a go on the swings!

Milestones.
- She has just started walking a little. She hasn't quite got the confidence and stability yet but she is getting there.
- She had said hiya, mumma and dadda for a while but has started saying 'what's that?'
- She has 5 teeth, 3 at the bottom and 2 at the top with 2 more at the top trying to come through.

What was your child doing at this age?
Amelia's First Year
Monday, February 02, 2015
I can't believe it's been a year since Amelia was born!
She was born on 25th January 2014 at 4.57pm and weighed 9lb 4oz which is big but Hollie was 9lb 14oz!
She was the full 2 weeks late and I was nearly induced but my contractions started just before they induced me.
Amelia had big dark eyes and a lot of thick brown hair when she was born which everyone has commented on when they see her!
The transition from one child to two wasn't too bad as Hollie is old enough to do things herself and help out. It's been great seeing Amelia grow but also how Hollie and Amelia have become sisters and grow up together.
The first picture was taken on her birthday. She was wearing the same outfit her sister wore on her first birthday!
Here some photos from Amelia's first year.

With all these lovely photos, it will be great to see how Amelia develops in her second year.
I will be doing a 12 month update soon so you can see how this little cheeky monkey is doing.
Baby Changing Organiser
Tuesday, July 15, 2014
When it comes to organising baby items and toys, I like to use boxes. I have a house full of boxes. My husband dreads going to places like Ikea as he knows we will come back with storage!
Before Amelia was born I wanted to find a box that I could use to store the items I would need to use for changing her nappy.
I came across a set in Ikea called Lattsam basket set. The set contains a large bin with lid, medium bin and a small bin and the large and medium have removable clips as they are designed to fit on a changing table.
I used the large bin as a rubbish bin in the car and used the small one in the bathroom. The medium bin is what I decided to use for this project.
I kept the clips on the bin and put the things in the bin, like the nappies, wipes, mat etc, that I would need to use most often.
When Amelia was in our room in her moses basket and then in her cot, I put the bin on the rail on the side of the cot.
When Amelia moved in to her sister's room, I put the bin on the top of the radiator. I didn't keep it in the cot as she moves a lot more now and obviously the radiator isn't on at the moment as it's summer but it's only on low when it is so I am not worried about it.
Normally the bin stays upstairs as I have a bigger box downstairs, but it could easily be moved around the house. It's so handy instead of looking for everything separately and so easy to refill.
Small organising projects might not seem like much but can be really helpful when you are in a hurry. I love it when I find something that makes life a little bit easier!
Hope you are having a lovely week.
Amelia's 5 month update
Friday, June 27, 2014
I thought I would start doing updates on Amelia to capture how much she changes.
Amelia was 5 months on the 25th June. It has gone fast and I am trying to make sure I enjoy the moments with her as it's so easy to get caught up with life.
She was weighed on Monday and weighs 16lbs 7oz and is still on the 75th centile.
We give her 5 7oz bottles a day but she drinks about 3 1/2 to 4 of them.
She hasn't started weaning yet but I can't see it being long before she will. I am aiming for 6 months as they can eat mashed food rather than puréed food at that age. I am going to start putting her in her high chair (well, Hollie's high chair) to get used to it.
She is still in 3-6 months clothes but I don't think it will be long before she is in 6-9 months.
She loves to smile and laugh especially with her sister and has begun to cry when I leave the room.

Amelia isn't interested in crawling or turning over etc. yet but would like to sit up rather than leaning on a cushion although she doesn't have the strength to stay sitting up yet.
She also loves to take her socks off.

Her latest trick is to shake her head and it tends to be just at the right time like when we are asking a question!
Amelia still has reflux but it is slightly better at the moment and she doesn't get pain with it and she dribbles a lot with teething as I mentioned in this post.
She sleeps through the night and has done since she was 8 weeks old which was the same with Hollie. I definitely don't take this for granted as I know this can change at any moment especially as she is teething and does wake maybe once or twice in the night due to teething but settles herself quite quickly.
We are beginning to see Amelia's character coming out (look at the cheeky smile!) and look forward to seeing what she gets up to next.
Hope you have a lovely weekend. See you soon.
Altering bibs with the snap poppers
Thursday, June 26, 2014
For a long time now, Amelia has had reflux and brings up a lot of milk after her feeds and also with teething, she dribbles a lot too.
Luckily, the reflux doesn't seem to give her any problems but obviously the teething givers her some trouble.
The problem I have is that the bibs that I saved from Hollie and even some of the bibs Amelia got new, were too big around the neck and wouldn't catch the sick or dribble (nice!).
So I did think about buying new bibs but I just couldn't justify buying news bibs and trying to find ones that were smaller, if that was even possible. So I decided to add a snap popper using the Kam pliers to each of the bibs to make them smaller. All I did was measure where the snap popper needed to be when the bib was on and then added one.
Such a simple thing has helped me solve a problem that was annoying me and helps me if the bibs stretch a bit in the future.
Have a lovely day. See you soon.

Pacifier Clip Holder
Friday, June 13, 2014
When looking online recently for dummy or pacifier holders, I came across a lot of varieties on Ebay as well as elsewhere. They were all so nice and pretty with characters like Minnie mouse and beads and letter beads to spell the babies name but I just wanted plain simple holders.
All these pacifier holders were made from simple ribbon and if you have seen my ribbon organisation, I have plenty of ribbon! I thought I would see how much it would cost to buy the tools. I managed to buy one of the Kam pliers for about £10 and it came with the screwdriver etc and press snaps in 2 sizes. I will be explaining more about the Kam pliers in another post soon. I also picked up some of the clips to attach to pushchair or clothes etc.
To make the pacifier holder, you need the following:
-Kam pliers and the accessories to fit the size of press snaps you are using.
-Screwdriver that came with the kit to change the accessories.
-Clips.
Scissors.
Liquid glue or lighter.
Liquid glue or lighter.
-Hole piercer ( I used Tim Holtz craft pick).
-Ribbon of your choice.
You need to decide how long you want the holder to be and add a couple of centimetres to allow you to fold over the ribbon before adding the press snaps, approx 7cms to create loop to attach pacifier and the same if you want the other end to be able to attach to a stroller as well as use the clip.
On one side make sure you add the clip on before add the second press snap as it won't go on afterwards. I made that mistake a few times!
On the other end you need to just add to press snaps to create the loop to hold the dummy. Also after I had finished making the holder, I added some liquid glue ( I used Ranger Glossy Accents from my craft stash but you could use others) to the end of the ribbons to stop them from fraying. You could do this before you put it together and also could heat set the ends with a lighter too.
These are some of the pacifier clip holder I have made as well. I could make so many with all the coloured ribbon I have!
I have a few more projects to use the Kam pliers for and will post them in the next few weeks.
Have a lovely weekend and see you soon!
