{The Ordinary Moments 16} #5 Amelia's birthday

Sunday, January 31, 2016

Monday was Amelia's 2nd birthday and we decided to keep it low key. She had a few visitors on Monday and then went out for a birthday meal on Tuesday with some family.

Keeping to the low key theme, I decided to make some shortbread biscuits with Hollie and cut them out in the shape of a 2 and Hollie had fun icing the biscuits.

Last year I bought a plain white iced cake and then decorated it myself and so decided to do the same again this year. I just simply bought some pale pink icing and cut out a 2 with the same cutter I used for the biscuits and then cut out some hearts to go around the cake.

A birthday might not be an ordinary moment but to a 2 year old who had plenty of toys already and then had more at Christmas, she didn't need too much and she isn't old enough yet to fully understand what birthdays are so it was quite an normal day but she was happy, enjoyed the wrapping paper and got lots of clothes which she needed so that's the main thing!

It's Hollies birthday in 2 weeks so it's on to the next birthday to sort out!

Amelia has loved her new dressing up outfits that she got for her birthday on Monday. She loves putting hats on, so this elephant costume went down well!

Although Hollie is constantly telling me that she is too old to play with her sister's 'baby' toys, she has enjoyed playing with the duplo that Amelia got for Christmas!

Childrens Memory Boxes

Friday, January 29, 2016

From the sentimental items as a newborn to the artwork that's collected in school, storing the childhood memories for you and your child is important.

I have 2 boxes for each of the girls, one baby box and one for items as a toddler onwards. I will show you what I have kept for Hollie as she is the eldest. Most of the boxes are from Homesense as they have some lovely designs and sizes.

The first box I have used is for items when Hollie was a baby. It's so lovely to keep the sentimental items that mean a lot to you and your child.

The items that I have kept in the baby box are gifts that were given to Hollie when she was born like the first tooth box, a bracelet and a plate as well as a congratulations balloon and the hospital tag.

Also I included one of the first dummies, first pair of shoes, first haircut and a clay mould that was taken when Hollie was 8 months old of her foot and hand.

As someone who loves cards I have kept some of the congratulations cards when Hollie was born and also some of her first birthday cards too.

The second box contains items that Hollie has made at nursery and school as well as some items that Hollie made at home. I have tried to keep these items to a minimum and things that have a special memory.

Also in the box are some photos that were taken at nursery and school and show Hollie making things and interacting with other children.

There is also a special good bye card from when Hollie left nursery, a drawing of her hand and her baby book.

I have also included the first sleep suit that Hollie wore as it didn't fit in her baby box and also some certificates that she has received over the years like attendance.

I have filled Amelia's baby box and have started her second box already. It's great to be able to put things straight in the box that we want to keep and know it's safe.

Hollie's boxes are quite full already but Hollie is at the age now where she doesn't do as much creative projects in school or home any more and so won't fill the box up with big items but I can always buy another box, it's not a problem.

I am so pleased that I have implemented these boxes as it's so easy for the girls to be able to look in the boxes and reminisce.

Is this something that you have or would like to create for your child/children? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments.

{The Ordinary Moments 16} #4 Girls New Bedding!

Sunday, January 24, 2016

When we bought a new bed for Hollie before Amelia was born, I knew we needed to get a bunk bed as there wasn't a lot of room for a cot bed let alone 2 single beds. I wanted to get a white bunk bed as I thought it would make the room lighter and fresher.

When Amelia went into the lower single bed a month ago, she still used her cot bed duvet but for an early birthday present for the girls I decided to buy matching duvet covers.

This you would think would be quite easy but it proved quite a task. I think I am quite picky when it comes to duvet covers but I hadn't realised that until I couldn't find what I was looking for!

Eventually I found this lovely mint and white duvet cover and the colours went with the rest of the room and was clean and fresh looking so helped make the room look bigger too!

I have to say that I was looking forward to seeing the duvets on the beds, all matching, clean and new but it just made me realise how the girls are growing up fast and how there is no more cot in the house!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that the kids are more than happy to move on but we as the adults are still trying to cling on to the baby/ toddler stages.

Do you think this is true? I would love to hear your thoughts.

We may not have had a lot of snow recently but when we did have snow, Hollie was desperate to get out and play in it.
Amelia on the other hand, wasn't too keen about it and didn't know what she was suppose to do. She was too little last year when we had snow and so this year was her first proper experience. She was quite unsure and was more than happy to be back in the house in the warm!

Sending thank you cards

Thursday, January 21, 2016

These days with all the types of social media, it's so easy to just send a quick thank you to someone that sent you a present, helped you out etc.

As much as I might do this now and again, I really like to send out thank you cards to people whether they are 20 or 80. To me as a crafter, I think that it shows that person that you were grateful and are thinking of them, which these days it's so easy to forget to thank people.

With the thank you cards I have made recently for people that bought the girls Christmas presents, I did some batch card making and made 9 cards all of the same theme but with different patterned papers.

I really like making cards, if you hadn't noticed from the past the past blog posts, and it's so easy to send cards whether you make them or buy them, I think it's important to show others that you are grateful.

Do you agree or do you think that social media has taken over and cards are redundant? I would love to know what you think.

{The Ordinary Moments 16} #3

Monday, January 18, 2016

Recently Amelia has been fascinated when I have been watching You tube videos and has started sitting on my lap and watching them with me!

I love that she does this as she doesn't sit still for very long usually and was never a very cuddly baby so this has been quite precious to me.  I hope that it continues!

Hollie has a little dolly called Daisy that she has had since she was born and she decided that this week her and Amelia each needed a photo with Daisy so here they are.

Have to say that I really love these photos of the girls.

The Girls: January 2016.

Friday, January 15, 2016

The girls this past month have still been very close but Hollie is beginning to want some space from her sister to play with things like her doll house and her Lego. Until recently Amelia hasn't minded this but as she is growing up, she is wanting to play with all the things that Hollie is playing with too so this has been hard to be able to keep the peace!

Just before Christmas, we put Amelia in the bottom of Hollie's bunk bed, rather than her cot bed as we were running out of space in their bedroom. They have really loved being able to sit, read and play on Amelia's bed as we struggled to read to Hollie while she was on top of her bunk bed and so now they love to sit (and jump!) on the bottom bed. I did wonder if putting Amelia into a single bed was too soon and she is such a cheeky monkey climbing the ladder and emptying everything in the wardrobes and drawers, but she has had no trouble adjusting to the bed, so that's great.

We have been adjusting to a few things over the last month and they have been a bit tough but even though Hollie is craving more space, the girls bond is still strong and and I am thankful for that.
