Hair accessory display

There are so many pretty hair accessories around these days that it is so easy to get carried away buying them. We have a fair few in our house, having two girls and they can just sit in a box or just lay around the house sometimes and not have a clue what we actually have.
Me being into crafts and making things, I decided to make a display for them!
I wasn't sure at first what kind of display I wanted to go with and looked at lots of ideas on Pinterest but in the end I decided to stick with a canvas frame.
Using a canvas meant that I didn't have to paint a frame and it wouldn't be open in the centre but was still sturdy enough to hold the clips.
I bought some ribbon from Hobbycraft that was 16mm wide and went with a grosgrain ribbon as it is thicker than a silk ribbon. I just spaced them out alternatively on the canvas and then secured them with some push pins to the back of the canvas.
The canvas is quite a big one as I wanted to use it for both the girls and chose to add their initials, one either side of the canvas. I bought some wooden letters while in Hobbycraft and painted them with normal matt emulsion, one pink and one mint green.
I wanted to add some sparkle to the letters so added some glitter paint to the letters. It worked really well. To secure the letters to the canvas I used some tacky glue.
To hang the canvas up on the wall, I added some ribbon secured by more push pins.
When I had rounded up most of the hair clips and bows, I added them to the canvas. Although they are on separates sides, Hollie has worn some of Amelia's pretty bow clips too!
I really hope that this canvas helps with keeping the girls hair accessories more organised, well we can try!

Ombre Butterfly Mobile

I have gradually been trying to sort the girls room out by rearranging the furniture and organising it. Now that I have the furniture where I want it (for the time being anyway), I wanted to do some projects.
One project that I wanted to do was to make another butterfly mobile like the one I made a few years ago.
The first one I made was all white and used two embroidery hoops. I decided to use another embroidery hoop for this mobile but I only had one as I was trying to use what I already had and I think it looks better with one anyway.
The butterflies were punched out of three different coloured card, a light, medium and a dark, to create an ombre effect to the mobile and I used a large Martha Stewart Monarch butterfly punch. I love this punch as it creates a more detailed butterfly than the one I used before.
To attach the butterflies to the mobile, I used some thin white cotton thread. I just tied the thread to the embroidery hoop.
To create the ombre effect I started with the darker butterflies at the top and then the middle colour and then the lightest at the bottom.
To attach the butterflies I used a glue dot in the middle of one butterfly, stuck it to the thread where I wanted to position it and then stuck another butterfly to it in the same position and then bent the butterfly to make it look like it was flying.
I really like the ombre effect as it adds more character to it.
I think this mobile as really easy to make and can be done in stages if you haven't got a lot of time in one go.
It would make a nice feature in a bedroom or playroom and you could change the butterflies to another shape like stars which I have done when I made one for my nephew.

Tassel Garland Tutorial

Today I am going to show you how I made the tassel garland that I made for Amelia's first birthday on Sunday.
I picked up these tissue papers in a local card shop and really loved the colours especially the mint green. I also found some washi tape in my stash that match quite well.
I cut the tissue paper into strips. I think I took the harder route of making the tassel's like this rather than keeping the tissue paper whole and cutting strips into it, but I started it like this so continued.
Next I gathered some of the strips and folded them in half and taped them up making a little loop of the top to thread the yarn though to hang it up.
I just added the tassel's to some yarn and put the yarn through the loop twice so keep the tassel's in place.
I hung the garland up under some shelves above my dining table and placed the yarn number one that I showed on Wednesday, above the garland.
I really like the colour combinations of the tassel garland and the yarn number and worked well with the stone colour of the wall.
It was so easy to make, adds a lovely pop of colour and you could make one for any occasion.
This, like the yarn number, will probably be put on a wall in the girls room to add some more colour.

Yarn Number One Tutorial

On Monday, I showed some pictures of Amelia's first birthday and showed some of the things I had made. Today I am going to show you how I made the yarn number one.
To make the number, I used some cardboard. I started off with one piece but in the end, ended up using three pieces to make it stronger. I went with some pink yarn and also gathered the tools I needed.
To make the number one shape I kind of just draw it freehand but you could print a number from word or something similar.
I cut out the shape with a craft knife and just made sure the edges were clean and not jagged.
Next, I started wrapping the yarn around the cardboard making sure I taped the end to begin with.
I carried on wrapping the yarn around the cardboard until I had wrapped it around in both directions and then wrapped the yarn around a few more times a bit more randomly to secure the yarn more.
This is the finished result. I was really pleased with the way it turned out and love the colour of the yarn.
I was going to embellish the number with bows and flowers but in the end I decided to keep it simple and just added a bow clip that I had made for the girls at Christmas and I really love the mint green with the pink.
Here is the yarn number hung on the wall and I just slotted it on to a nail gently between some of the yarn.
This took me a little longer to make than I originally thought it would because I needed to add more layers of cardboard but once I had sorted out that it was really easy to wrap the yarn around.
I think this makes such a cute birthday decoration and you can keep this on a wall in the child's bedroom, which is what I intend to do.

Heart Word Art Frames

After Amelia was born I wanted to make some artwork that had her name, date of birth, weight etc. on but wasn't sure what kind to make.
I liked the idea of the artwork that has all the words mixed up but still looks pretty.
I came across a website called Tagxedo that makes word clouds which are shapes filled with words. There are so many shapes, colours and fonts to choose from and it's free!
You just load all the words you want to include and change the layout etc. of the words and when you are done, you can print them out.
I made one for Amelia and one for Hollie. I kept the fonts the same and stuck with heart shapes but change the colours.
I think they look really pretty.
They sit nicely on the mantle and are a little reminder of the time and weight etc. of the girls.

Updated wooden drawers

I have been loving the Martha Stewart home office range that's in Staples now and especially as they have had up to 40% off the range and could quite easily buy so much of it.
The one thing I did buy was the small bookplates.
I wanted to jazz up some plain wooden drawers I had.
This is what the drawers look like when I bought it from Ikea a few years ago and were just bare wood.
I forgot to take a picture of the drawers when they were plain yellow as I was so eager to label them, but you can see them in the picture below from my craft room post.
So I used the Martha Stewart small book plates on the front of the drawers and that instantly made the drawers look better.
I didn't want to just add some plain white labels, so covered the white labels with some washi tape in the center and then added a label I made using my label maker and the clear tape.
This is what the drawers looked like before adding the clear labels on them. It adds just enough colour to the drawers.
I thought I would show you what is in the drawers.
The first one has a lot of post it notes.
The next drawer has folder tabs, sticky labels and book plates.
Then there is a drawer with office stationery.
This drawer has a lot of Ikea hooks, some magazine file plates, screen cloth and a magnetic rack thingamabob!
There is a drawer full of pens and pencils.
and the bottom drawer has more office stationery.
So this is what the drawers look like all spruced up and labelled. I think they look much better, less plain and more organised.
